More than coffee: It's a neighborhood

Coffeeshops like Bill's are more than a place to get a cup and a little
conversation. They are also places where people go to talk about their
hopes and lives. In a way, they are "neighborhoods."

This idea of neighborhoods is not new. But perhaps it is more important as the
traditional idea of physical neighborhoods has declined. So many of the new
neighborhoods do not have places to linger, places to talk about the events of the day, places to share ideas and tools.

But the best coffeeshops are places to linger, to share ideas, and to exchange everything from tools to CDs. Not all coffeeshops work this way. Reader Kelly Dobson points this out in his comments elsewhere in this blog. He offers some guidelines for a community coffeeshop, one which really functions as a neighborhood:

+ Is it open to all? Does it include not only those who don't have a neighborhood, but also those who don't even have a home?

+ Are the restrooms for all, or limited to those who buy something?

+ Is there an inexpensive coffee on the menu?

Dobson's questions are a start on a list for coffeeshops which are really a "neighborhood." You probably have some ideas, too. Click on the comment button below and add your thoughts.

The idea of a coffee shop being a neighborhood gathering place is a great idea. I think all coffee shops should be a place for friends and family to gather and share stories and festivities. Having a local coffee shop set up in every area would be a great way for the neighborhood to gather and get to know each other. I hope that in the future more coffee shops will pop up with ideas along the lines of the ones outlined in your blog entry.

Coffee shops as being more than a place to get coffee is a great thing. People come together to discuss a variety of issues that they might not be able to discuss in other places. I know my grandparents and their friends meet every Sunday after church to talk about anything. Having someone else to talk to besides your significant other is a great way to open up and get to know others.

I agree that a coffee shop is more than just a coffee shops and a place to catch up with those that we do not see as often as we would like. I know from experiences that a friends and I take time out of our busy schedules and meet at a coffee shop just to see how each other is and see what’s going on. I don’t know if we would do the something if we lived in the same neighborhood. I think that coffee shops are a great thing to have in a community.
