INSPIRATION BEHIND
PEET'S COFFEE & TEA
Uptown Bill's carries more than 20 varieties of tea. Several come to us from Peet's Coffee & Tea in Berkeley, Calif. Among these: Masala Chai, Jasmine Fancy, Chamomile and Lemon Rose.

Alfred Peet was the man behind Peet's. He was a Dutch immigrant who played a key role in reinvigorating coffeeshops in the US. He was the founder of Peet's Coffee & Tea in Berkeley, Calif. His coffeeshop, opened in 1966,  became a favorite hangout for faculty and students at the University of Calif. and inspired many others to open similar coffeeshops. Among those he inspired were the founders of Starbucks. Peet died in 2007. He was 87.You can find out more about Peet's Coffee at www.peets.com.  Also, check out the Facebook page.

OUR READERS WRITE
Thanks for the narrative about Martin Luther King and Jane Addams.  As a result of my age, I'm familiar with the MLK story, not so much about Ms. Adams.

I was working on a small daily newspaper at the time Martin Luther King was awarded the Peace Prize. A fellow worker of mine in the news room, expressed both surprise and unhappiness at the selection. I remember him saying something to the effect, "How could they award him a Peace Prize, when he's done more to create just the opposite with all of his crap." And on and on. Those were not, unfortunately, unusual thoughts at that time.

Yes, perhaps "...the truth shall set you free." But we sometimes pay a huge price for speaking the truth. And also there are those who believe they are speaking the truth, but it's only their bias. I'm a firm believer in the belief that --  We can protect ourselves from those doing evil in the name of greed and avarice, but God save us from those doing evil in the name of righteousness.

NEW TWISTS ON
CHICKEN JOKE
Why did the chicken cross the road?

Hemingway: To die. In the rain. Alone.

Karl Marx: It was an historical inevitability.

Bill Gates: I have just released e-Chicken 2013, which will not only cross
roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents and balance your checkbook.
Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of e-Chicken.

George W. Bush: We don't really care why the chicken cross the road. We just
want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is
either with us or against us.

Ralph Nader: The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road has been
spoiled by unchecked corporate greed. The chicken did not reach the other side
of the road because it was crushed by an SUV.

Editor's note: Other explanations about why the chicken crossed the road are welcome.
