Still an experiment
Wild Bill's Coffeeshop in Iowa City is a continuing experiment in the
"social" part of social work. From the beginning, the coffeeshop's
goal has been to bring people together across boundaries which divide
us. The particular mission of Bill's has been to offer a place for
crossing a boundary called "ability." Bob Finch, a longtime friend and
supporter, calls this "abilities awareness."
But there are other boundaries, too, which Bill's tries to cross, including
those between student and teacher, and between campus and community. It is
an ongoing project, something which continues to unfold.
Ideas for the role of the coffeeshop come both from the unique history
of Bill's and from the history of the social work profession. Hull
House in Chicago had a coffeeshop before 1900. It was one of the very
first projects of the settlement house started by Jane Addams and
Ellen Gates Starr.
From reading the letters and speeches of Jane Addams, I have discovered
that the reasons for the success of the Hull House coffeeshop are quite
similar to those for the success of Bil's (and similar ventures)
today. Back then, people wanted a sense of community, a place where
they felt they belonged. They also wanted an informal place.
Now, in 2006, people who visit Wild Bill's say they come for similar
reasons. Customers say that what they like is the informality of the
coffeeshop and its feeling of community. Ray Oldenberg, who wrote a
book on coffeeshops and cafes, says the best coffeeshops are a "third
place" between home and work. (His book echoes some of the themes of a
study conducted by Hull House researchers more than a century ago.)
Each day, those who come to Wild Bill's take part in an experiment
with the "social" in social work. It can be found in art projects and in
conversations, in office hours and in student meetings. It can also be
found in the music and theater presented in the coffeeshop and in the AA
groups which meet here.
The coffeeshop is an ever-evolving effort in creating a sense of
community. It is a place to experience "belonging moments," in
the words of Jenny Barry, a 2001 MSW grad.
We can take these experiences at Bill's (and similar places) and carry
them with us wherever we go. Then we can create new "belonging
moments" for others in the communities where we work and live.

I still say that such an inspiring idea has a place in sioux falls. there are not enough places for teens and others to meet, exchange ideas and knowledge. we should try to start one.
It is amazing to me that Jane Adams and her posse started the ideal of people coming together in a calm and relaxing setting to drink coffee and to talk about their day it provided a setting for people to go who didn't want to go to the bars. Socially it provided a safe place to go to meet people and to get their lives together. For the spirit of the coffee houses to succeed and re-invent itself and yet stay the same throughout time is amazing to me. When I think about the atmosphere of a coffe house it is like no other. You can have a setting where you and someone you know can just sit a relax, talk, have coffee or tea and not feel rushed, there is just a special nuance about a coffee house. The workers alwalys seem relaxed and free spirted, and treat you as if there is no other place in the world they would rather be.
I liked the statement that Wild Bill's Coffeeshop helps to bridge the gap of all people, it allows anyone who wants to participate in the atmosphere is welcomed to do so. It's amazing how this history of a coffee shop goes all the way back to the Hull House.
I think the idea of a coffee house is great. It is a laid back environment where all people can share conversations. There are such a wide variety of people who visit coffee houses and its amazing some of the relationships that can grow form just a simple cup of joe.
I have read all the blogs here and the all say the same thing to me. I am a avid coffee drinker and wouldn't change that for anything. I go and sit at coffee shops all the time because I like the conversations and the oppertunity to meet someone new.The coffee shop scene has never changed and thats a good thing in life. Many interesting friendships and conversations start in a coffee house because people feel more comfortable talking. I have had some of my best problem solving and heart felt talks over a cup of java. I owe alot of thanks to Jane Adams for starting the idea and to Bill for keeping it going.

I'm entrigued as to why is it human nature to have a "want" of sense of belonging. The coffehouse and their communities are usually peaceful and relaxing, I'll go into one anytime! TT
I love the idea of a small community within this coffee house. I happen to work at a coffee bar and simlar things happen. The workers know who comes in when and talk to all the regulars about life and what has been going on. I agree that its a great feeling to be able to go somewhere and get that sense of community. We all need that place in our lives. It really is a type of social work, because you are connecting people on a whole different level than you could in group meetings or one-on-one sessions.

Is there anything Jane Addams can not do? From today all the way back to the Hull House people can go to a coffee shop and just relax and get to know one another. I think the coffee house is a great idea it brings all kinds of people together, from African Americans to Jewish people in a coffee house it does not matter who you are or where you came from. A coffee house is also a place where one can express what they are feeling. Most coffee houses have a poetry night where there is also an artist panting what they learn from the poem. It is one of the only places today where who you are does not matter.

I never looked at coffee shops in this way until I heard about Bill's. I think its great that people have a place to go and relax with others that they can relate to. Or they have the people who just want to get to know you. I hope to make it there some day.

It doesn't surprise me that Jane Addams had one of the first coffeeshops around! I think that it is a great idea to have a place to feel comfortable at and it doesn't have to be their homes!

I think it says quite a bit about coffeehouses that it has been a community or second family for people since Jane Adam's time. I think that overtime coffee and coffeehouses have really proven themselves to be bonding for people. It's an non-intimidating place for people to meet up, relax, and be themselves. In a discussion with a friend we decided that coffee spurs creativity and I could see that as well as it was discussed in the article that there are people coming up with new ideas and creating artwork.

It is such a great idea, yet a sad story. In our neighborhood there is nothing like a coffee shop to share and visit. I know that our elders are waiting to share their story with someone. I also know that the Veteran's would like to just visit with those that would like to hear. Then there are the youth and we have no place for them to go and be social. I think it would be a great outlet for those that just want to relax and share and be social. If there is no outlet for socializing then where do they get it from. Is it mostly positive or negative? I think that there needs to be more provided for those like a coffee shop or just a lounge area that is filled with a great atmosphere and the environment is healthy and full of joy and peace.

I like the atmosphere of various coffee shops and think that they are great places for people to hang out and be a part of the community. Bill was a great influence to his coffee shop and had a great love of what he did. He wanted to make people happy and I think that it is great that the shop is still running.
This is a great article. This article shows the impact coffee houses have on individuals, groups, and the community as a whole. It is also nice to see that Bill's legacy is still so strong and people remember him for the amazing person he was/is. I think coffee houses are a great place to go to be yourself and meet some great people. It is also a place where people can feel that they belong, which is very important. I especially liked the idea that a coffee house is sort of like a third home. Like another student had said, it is really cool to see that coffee houses still impact people, even since the early 1900s with Jane Addams and Hull House. Coffee shops are a great place to go to spend some free time by yourself and relax, or with a group of people or friends.

This is an awesome article. I like how it says that people just want a place were they feel that they belong. Coffee shops are a great way to meet people, especially if you are new to the area and are not too familiar with that particular town or people. It is great to know that Bill had such a strong influence on this coffee shop. Nikala L.
I was a writing tutor at the Wild Bill's satellite site for the writing center, and it was by far the most interesting and fun place to tutor. Plus I loved the access to food!
